FOOD is an essential necessity for all living beings to survive and sustain life. The energy obtained from adequate nutrition supports daily activities, physical growth, intellectual development, and protection against various diseases. Therefore, food can be regarded as one of the most fundamental needs in a human being’s life.
Food security is not only one of the most fundamental needs for a family, but also plays a crucial role in ensuring the stability, peace, prosperity, and sustainable development of a country. Therefore, countries around the world, including Myanmar, have been continuously striving to achieve food abundance and security by focusing on agriculture and livestock breeding.
The State is implementing agriculture and livestock breeding zones in various regions as necessary to ensure that the people have access to adequate food and ease in their daily lives. Such efforts are not primarily aimed at making profits, but rather at enabling the people to purchase and consume sufficient meat, fish, and seasonal crops at affordable prices.
Myanmar has a favourable foundation and natural conditions that enable the extensive operation of agriculture and livestock breeding businesses. In addition, as more than 70 per cent of the country’s population consists of rural residents engaged in agriculture and livestock breeding, there are greater opportunities to successfully develop these sectors. Therefore, to achieve targeted yields in the cultivation of rice and other crops, farmers and agricultural businesses need to systematically follow and apply the methods of “seed, land, water, and technology.” They should use quality and pure seeds, systematically improve soil conditions, efficiently utilize irrigation water, and apply modern technologies in agricultural and livestock production.
Moreover, priority should be given not merely to expanding cultivated areas, but to increasing productivity per acre. If multiple cropping and intercropping can be practised on existing land resources, farmers’ incomes will increase further. Through the enhancement of agricultural and livestock production in every rural area, local economic activities will become more developed and create more employment opportunities.
As such, all relevant stakeholders, including the government, responsible authorities, and those engaged in agriculture and livestock breeding, must work together collaboratively to ensure food security, the availability of healthy and nutritious food, and the stability and improvement of ecosystems.
Only through such cooperation can climate-resilient agricultural and livestock breeding systems and good practices be developed, leading to increased production of agricultural and livestock products. This will help ensure the availability and abundance of safe and nutritious food, while contributing to the sustainable development of the country.
