THE opening ceremony of the 2026 Inter-Region and State Traditional Lethwei Championship was held at Theinbyu Gymnasium in Yangon Region yesterday morning.

Yangon Region Chief Minister U Aung Naing Thu, Myanmar National Human Rights Commission Chairman U Thit Linn Ohn, Deputy Minister for Sports U Nyi Nyi, regional ministers, officials from the Department of Sports and Physical Education and the Myanmar Traditional Lethwei Federation, as well as coaches, athletes and officials from various regions and states, attended the ceremony.

Yangon Region Chief Minister U Aung Naing Thu delivered the opening remarks, followed by an address by Deputy Minister for Sports U Nyi Nyi, who officially opened the championship.

The participating athletes then recited the four sports oaths, after which the chief minister and officials greeted them. U Aung Naing Thu also presented cash awards to the marching band.

The chief minister and officials then watched the opening bout in the men’s 51-kilogramme novice category between San Naing Htay of Yangon Region and Kyaw Kyaw Htay of Mon State.

A total of 123 athletes will compete in 107 bouts from 13 to 20 August 2026, with matches scheduled to begin at noon each day.
