UNION Minister for Electricity and Energy U Ko Ko Lwin departed from Mandalay International Airport on the afternoon of 12 April to visit the Russian Federation via China, at the invitation of Mr Anton Kobyakov, Adviser to the President of Russia, and Mr S E Tsivilev, Minister of Energy of the Russian Federation. The visit, scheduled from 12 to 18 April 2026, aims to enhance cooperation between Myanmar and Russia in the electricity and energy sectors.
The Myanmar delegation, led by the Union minister, arrived in Kunming, China, in the evening, where they were welcomed with a working dinner hosted by Mr Liu Yong, Deputy Governor of Yunnan Province.
During the dinner, both sides exchanged views on cooperation in the electricity and energy sectors.
During their stay in Kunming, the delegation also held discussions with representatives from Chinese state-owned companies cooperating with Myanmar’s Ministry of Electricity and Energy, including China Southern Power Grid, Yunnan Energy Group, Union Resources & Engineering Co Ltd, and Yunnan Xiangshan Export and Import Co Ltd.
During the discussion with China Southern Power Grid, the two sides discussed the ongoing China-Myanmar cross-border power transmission line, plans to conduct feasibility studies for hydropower projects along the Mekong River on the Myanmar-Laos border, opportunities to participate in the Laos-Myanmar cross-border hydropower project, the need to plan and develop a power transmission network to deliver electricity from northern hydropower projects to southern consumption areas once completed, reducing power losses in Yangon electricity distribution system, and developing a practical system design for EV charging stations integrated with solar energy to align with Myanmar’s power system.
During the discussion with Yunnan Energy Group and Union Resources & Engineering Co Ltd, they discussed the potential to develop solar and wind power plants in Myanmar and to accelerate ongoing hydropower, solar, wind, and LNG power plant projects in the country.
In discussions with Yunnan Xiangshan Export and Import Co Ltd, matters related to securing long-term fuel oil imports into Myanmar at more affordable rates were discussed.
