The Department of Meteorology and Hydrology reported that 174 aftershocks had occurred by 15 May following the major earthquake in Mandalay.
Aftershocks were recorded in and around Nay Pyi Taw, Mandalay, Sagaing, and Shan State, with magnitudes ranging from 3.0 to 5.5 on the Richter scale.
The Mandalay earthquake devastated ancient cultural heritage sites and residential buildings in areas such as Mandalay, Amarapura, Inwa, Meiktila, Sagaing, and Nay Pyi Taw. As of 15 May, the disaster has claimed over 3,700 lives, left more than 5,000 injured across six regions and states, and resulted in the rescue of 653 survivors.
The Mandalay earthquake caused significant damage to major roads in Mandalay, where debris is being cleared to ensure road safety and prevent blockages, with over 80 per cent of damaged buildings already removed.
In Sagaing, Sagaing Region, 50 per cent of the damaged buildings from the Mandalay earthquake have been cleared. Heavy machinery has been used in the ongoing cleanup to remove debris from high-rise structures, including large Buddhist learning centres and religious buildings situated on elevated ground.
