THE first coordination meeting of Myanmar’s Joint Working Group on Water Quality Management in Boundary and Transboundary Rivers between Myanmar and Thailand was held yesterday afternoon at the meeting hall of the Environmental Conservation Department to implement the Terms of Reference (TOR) signed by the permanent secretaries of the relevant ministries of the two countries on 6 August 2026.
At the meeting, Deputy Minister for Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation Dr Thaung Naing Oo said the TOR would remain effective for three years from the date of signing and stressed the need for coordination among relevant departments to ensure its effective implementation. JWG meetings would be held at least twice a year, normally every six months, alternately in Myanmar and Thailand.
He also highlighted the need to carry out joint water quality monitoring, identify sources of water pollution, share data, establish early warning systems, and promote cooperation in public health and technical matters. He called for the preparation of a three-year master plan and annual work plans, along with the necessary manpower, equipment, technology and financial resources.
The JWG members coordinated the discussion, and the deputy minister concluded the meeting.
