THE Government of Myanmar places strong emphasis on preventing and combatting online scams and online gambling, which pose serious threats to the socioeconomic well-being of the people.
It is carrying out preventive measures, investigations, arrests and legal proceedings against offenders as a matter of national responsibility. In this regard, following a tip-off that online scam and gambling activities were being conducted in Ward 12, Area 19, Lashio, northern Shan State, a joint team comprising security personnel and departmental officials searched and inspected the area last night.
During the inspection, the team identified and arrested four Myanmar nationals, comprising three men and one woman, who were conducting online scam and gambling activities at a house on Shweli Street No 7 in the ward. The team also seized six mobile phones of various types, three laptops, a 12-volt battery, a solar panel, a Wi-Fi device, other related equipment and K205,000 in cash. The four arrested individuals, together with the seized equipment and cash, will face legal action under Section 33(a) of the Electronic Transactions Law.
The case has been registered at Lashio Myoma Police Station. Efforts to eradicate online scam and gambling activities at their roots are reportedly continuing without interruption, with particular emphasis on preventing such activities from becoming established and eliminating them.
