The Ministry of Health stated that the risk of heart and vascular disease among adults in Myanmar is expected to rise by 20 per cent or more over the next 10 years.
Deputy Minister for Health Dr Aye Tun made the remarks at the World Heart Day 2026 ceremony held at the Ministry of Health in Nay Pyi Taw on 29 September.
According to a 2024 survey on the causes of non-communicable diseases, 24.4 per cent of adults had high blood pressure, while 13.4 per cent of people aged 40 to 69 had heart and vascular disease.
The deputy minister said that it is necessary to monitor and treat symptoms early and systematically because heart health is important. He added that the global goal is to reduce the prevalence of non-communicable diseases such as cancer and heart and vascular disease, with a target of reducing premature deaths from diabetes and chronic lung and respiratory diseases by one-third.
In addition, the deputy minister emphasized that heart and vascular diseases can be effectively prevented by eating a healthy diet, refraining from smoking and using tobacco products, avoiding excessive alcohol consumption, engaging in regular moderate physical activity and leading a stress-free lifestyle. — TWA/MKKS
