Through dialogue, collaboration, and working to understand different points of view, we ensure that no one is left behind. The International Day of Democracy provides an opportunity to review the state of democracy in the world.
Freedom of expression is a fundamental human right, enshrined in Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. But around the world, there are governments and those wielding power who find many ways to obstruct it. In this regard, it is necessary to examine why these governments restrict freedom of expression. Everyone should consider whether those exercising the right to freedom of expression abide by the prescribed rules, regulations and disciplines, as well as universal human rights principles, which fundamentally emphasize the need to respect the rights of others. That is why everyone wishing to enjoy the fruits of democracy must cultivate a spirit of consideration for others.
They must abide by the laws, rules and regulations enacted for all, especially by refraining from violating the rights of others. In fact, those who violate universal human rights do not deserve democracy. The essence of democracy lies in following disciplines that do not harm others and in taking responsibility and accountability for one’s own actions. Hence, everyone needs to reflect on how they truly understand and accept the essence of democracy and how they wish to practise democratic principles. Everyone should understand that no one is perfect. Therefore, everyone has certain weaknesses in their physical and mental behaviour and conduct. Although some actions may be forgiven and settled within society, certain behaviours may be beyond an individual’s ability to forgive or overlook, even from their own perspective and according to their personal beliefs.
Those who wish to practise democracy should build a peaceful and prosperous society by respecting the majority decision, which is the essence of democracy, while giving due consideration to the views of the minority. It is important that decisions made by the majority should not amount to imposing their will on the minority. The minority should not always oppose the majority. Rather, they should point out ways to improve the decisions of the majority and reduce their shortcomings, and then abide by and implement those decisions. Everybody must uphold and practise the true essence of democracy and work for the interests of themselves and their country.
