IN Laymyethna Township, Ayeyawady Region, heavy rainfall and river erosion on the night of 30 July 2026 caused water to breach and flow through a sand ridge at the base of the Ngawun River embankment. As of today, floodwaters have entered five urban wards in Laymyethna, major roads in the town and 121 surrounding villages-37 villages in Hinthada Township; two wards and 24 surrounding villages in Yekyi Township; two wards in Ngathainggyoung and six villages in Kyonpyaw Township; and totalling nine wards and 188 villages have been affected by flooding.
Tatmadaw personnel from the South-West Command, members of the Myanmar Police Force, firefighters, social rescue groups, charitable organizations and local ethnic groups are jointly conducting search and rescue operations for flood victims while providing food and necessary healthcare. To control and protect the water inlet from the Ngawun embankment, geotextile bags (geobags)are being placed, sandbags are being filled into floating docks, and steel sheet piles are being driven.
Tatmadaw personnel, members of the Myanmar Police Force, firefighters and charitable organizations are jointly cleaning schools and roads in areas where floodwaters have receded. Officials from the South-West Command are coordinating the necessary measures. — MNA/KTZH
