Pyithu Hluttaw Speaker U Khin Yi, accompanied by Deputy Speaker U Maung Maung Ohn, met more than 120 faculty members and students from the International Leadership College (ILC) at the Thabin Hall in the Hluttaw Building yesterday afternoon after they observed the 21st day of the second regular session of the Third Pyithu Hluttaw.
In his welcoming remarks, Speaker U Khin Yi expressed his pleasure at meeting the delegation, which included undergraduate, master’s and doctoral students with an interest in parliamentary affairs. He said the Hluttaw is composed of representatives democratically elected by voters in their respective constituencies to represent the interests of the people. The Speaker explained that Myanmar has a bicameral parliamentary system, with the Pyithu Hluttaw and Amyotha Hluttaw forming the Pyidaungsu Hluttaw, while each Region and State has its own legislature.
Explaining the Hluttaw’s principal functions, the Speaker outlined its three core responsibilities: enacting legislation to support national development and uphold the rule of law; representing the interests and aspirations of the people; and exercising checks and balances in coordination with the other branches of government to promote national stability and development.
He said Hluttaw committees serve as the foundation of the Hluttaw’s work. Stressing the importance of education to national development, he noted that the Hluttaw has established the Education Promotion Committee to work with the government to strengthen the education sector through clearly defined objectives and responsibilities.
The Speaker encouraged the visiting students to place their confidence in the Hluttaw and to contribute to the country’s future. He said the Hluttaw remains open to young people and announced plans to organize youth roundtables, youth debates and “Open Parliament” programmes.
During the interactive session, students asked questions about the role of the Pyithu Hluttaw, the legislative process and the education sector, which were answered by the Speaker.
The meeting concluded with Speaker U Khin Yi and Deputy Speaker U Maung Maung Ohn greeting the ILC faculty members and students individually.
