Myanmar producers are ramping up efforts to export eco-friendly, value-added products crafted from banana fibre and wild grass, according to local enterprise Green Banana Myanmar.
Currently, from these raw materials, various value-added products like handbags, scarves, fabric, slippers and mats are being produced in line with modern trends. As they are gaining public interest, orders are also being received.
“Since banana trees must be cut after fruiting, the trunks are split to extract fibres. The first layer is coarse and used as fibres, while the smooth part near the core is used as thread. From there, products like bags, shirts, men’s shoes, women’s shoes, scarves, and mats are produced in line with modern trends. We also produce from grass. We have some orders and are trying to export,” said the secretary of Green Banana Myanmar.
Green Banana Myanmar CEO U Myint Thein initiated creating banana-related products in 2019. He aims to share these with new generations. At the Green Banana Myanmar branch on Hlegu-Phaunggyi Road, they offer training on banana and grass product manufacturing as well as business incubation methods. They also provide training in other cities.
It is also learned from other entrepreneurs that there is growing interest among young people in consuming domestically produced value-added products.
