THE Yangon Zoological Gardens has announced that rare young orangutans, listed as critically endangered in the wild, have arrived at the zoo and are now available for public viewing. On 21 May, it was announced that a pair of Bornean Orangutans had arrived at the zoo. Orangutans are tailless apes that are highly intelligent and share very close genetics with humans.
In the Malay language, their name translates to “people of the forest”. They were last exhibited at the Yangon Zoo approximately 40 years ago. Now, the public will once again have the opportunity to meet them, and the zoo invites everyone to come and personally observe the adorable behaviours and movements of this cute male orangutan, Leo, and female orangutan, Pinky. Orangutan species are found in Southeast Asia on the islands of Sumatra and Borneo.
These lovely animals typically live in the wild by building nests high up in trees, using their long, strong arms to swing from tree to tree. They are known to be capable of independently solving problems and even handling and using tools.
