POTATOES from the southern Shan State are grasping a strong foreign market share beyond self-sufficiency, according to the Myanmar Trade Promotion Organization operated under the Department of Consumer Affairs.

Demand for high-quality potatoes is robust. Potatoes are a staple food in consumers’ kitchens due to their nutritional powerhouse. The potato processing industry transforms raw potatoes into high-demand, value-added products. The global snack industry (potato fries, chips) booms, resulting in a massive surge in potato demand. Nonetheless, there are some challenges in potato cultivation and the market. Farmers need management strategies to stabilize their profits amidst rising production costs, erratic weather, transportation difficulties, and price instability.

Shan potatoes, known for their good quality and the farmers’ cultivation experience, have strong potential for market expansion. If technology, storage systems, and market linkages are improved, that could increase farmers’ incomes.

Shan potatoes are one of the important crops in Myanmar’s agricultural sector. Despite price changes and market fluctuation, there is good potential for future growth. Collaboration among the supply chain stakeholders, including farmers, traders, and the government, could further improve potato cultivation. Southern Shan State is one of the highest potato-producing areas in Myanmar, with major production in Heho, Aungban, Pindaya, Kalaw, Naungtaya, and Tikyit. Mountain climate and fertile soil provide a good environment for potato cultivation. In the 2025-2026 Financial Year, increased cultivation costs and transportation expenses raised the potato prices. — NN/KK
