The government of Myanmar is carrying out the prevention and control of the dangers posed by narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances as a national responsibility. In 2025, more than K4.285 billion was confiscated as public property in connection with 685 drug-related cases. Up to August 2026, more than K3.585 billion had been confiscated and seized as public property from 356 drug-related cases.
The drug problem is a global issue that countries around the world are facing. The drug problem has a significant impact on social and economic affairs, public health, peace and stability, and national development. According to statistics from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), there were approximately 316 million drug users worldwide in 2025.
Armed insurgent groups that pose major obstacles to peace, stability and development in Myanmar are taking advantage of the ongoing internal conflict to engage in the production, transportation and trafficking of narcotic drugs, as well as the procurement of weapons and ammunition and the recruitment of new members. They transport chemicals and other materials used in drug production from foreign countries and manufacture narcotic drugs in areas under their control.
Based on the successes of Operation 42, a special operation to combat narcotic drugs in Myanmar, the operations must continue, while measures must also be taken to prevent the entry of not only narcotic drugs but also chemicals, related materials and chemists involved in drug production.
At maritime entry and exit points, measures are being taken in cooperation with the Tatmadaw (Navy), Marine Police Force and port authorities to block and seize narcotic drugs. In addition, inspections and monitoring are being conducted at KTVs, bars, clubs, entertainment venues, hotels, motels and guesthouses in the Nay Pyi Taw Council Area, regions and states to prevent the use and sale of narcotic drugs, while investigations are being carried out to identify and arrest those involved.
Rewards and honorary medals are being presented to Tatmadaw members, Myanmar Police Force and partner organizations, as well as informants, who have made sacrifices and contributed to drug control and suppression efforts. When weapons and ammunition are seized together with narcotic drugs, additional rewards are also being provided in accordance with the Counter-Terrorism Law.
Efforts to prevent, control and ultimately eliminate narcotic drugs will be more successful only with the active participation and cooperation of the people together with the government. This will also help reduce crimes arising from drug-related activities in the country. Therefore, everyone is urged to work together toward eliminating narcotic drugs and creating a drug-free society.
