In Laymyethna Township, Ayeyawady Region, about 35.86 acres of fish ponds were flooded due to flooding. Once the floodwaters recede, fingerlings will be distributed, and rehabilitation work will be carried out for the affected fish ponds, according to an official from the Ayeyawady Region Fisheries Department.

“There are four government-owned fish hatcheries in Ayeyawady Region. We are planning to provide fingerlings produced at these hatcheries to fish farmers who have suffered losses due to flooding. We are also planning to reissue fish-farming licences if farmers have lost their licences,” the official said. There are more than 220,000 acres of fish ponds in Ayeyawady Region. Fish farmers mainly raise rohu, which are primarily supplied to markets in Yangon Region. — ASH/KNN
