MYANMAR is hosting the 37th Meeting of ASE­AN Senior Officials on Environment (ASOEN) and Related Meetings virtually from 10 to 13 August.

The opening ceremo­ny was held at the Park­royal Hotel in Nay Pyi Taw on 10 August. Un­ion Minister for Natural Resources and Environ­mental Conservation U Hsan Oo called for closer ASEAN cooperation to address environmental challenges, including climate change, plastic pollution, biodiversity loss and transboundary haze pollution.

ASEAN Chair and Philippine Department of Environment and Natu­ral Resources Undersec­retary for Policy, Plan­ning and International Affairs, Attorney Jonas R Leones, also delivered opening remarks online.

Deputy Minister Dr Thaung Naing Oo and officials attended the opening ceremony, while senior environmental officials from ASEAN member states, chairs of the working groups, and representatives from the ASEAN Secretariat, the ASEAN Centre for Biodi­versity and the ASEAN Specialized Meteorolog­ical Centre joined virtu­ally. — MNA/KZL
