Myanmar is expanding efforts to conserve and improve native goat and sheep breeds at the Applied Research and Goat Breeding Farm in Meiktila Township, Mandalay Region, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation.
On 1 August, Deputy Minister Dr Ye Tun Win inspected the facility and urged officials to strengthen breeding programmes to produce higher-quality goats and sheep while preserving local genetic resources.
During the visit, he also met goat farmers from Hsuphyukwet Village to discuss expanding goat farming suited to local climate and conditions, as well as increasing the use of domestically produced animal feed.
The deputy minister also visited private goat farms and met livestock officials from Meiktila, Pyawbwe and Yamethin townships. Discussions focused on promoting region-specific livestock development, supporting micro-, small- and medium-sized livestock-based industries, strengthening biosecurity measures and improving the prevention and control of animal diseases. — MNA/ST
