The Ministry of Electricity and Energy is accelerating the replacement of underperforming electricity meters and those that have been in service for more than 20 years, while also expediting the installation of new meters for consumers. The initiative aims to reduce and eliminate electricity theft.
On Saturday morning, Union Minister for Electricity and Energy U Ko Ko Lwin inspected several facilities in Dekkhinathiri Township, Nay Pyi Taw Council Area. These included the Meter Testing Subdivision, where security seals are affixed to digital smart meters before distribution to consumers, the Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) Control Centre, which monitors electricity consumption in real time and the National Control Centre at the Power Despatch Subdivision in Nay Pyi Taw. According to the ministry, about 15.6 per cent of the electricity transmitted through the national distribution network is lost each day, equivalent to about 10.7 million units, resulting in an average daily financial loss of more than K 2.75 billion for the State. Such losses not only hinder investment in upgrading the country’s electricity infrastructure but also reduce opportunities for new consumers to gain access to electricity services. To address these challenges, the ministry is implementing comprehensive measures to increase electricity supply, reduce transmission and distribution losses, curb electricity theft, and ensure a more stable and reliable power distribution system across the country.
