Ten foreign nationals involved in online scam activities and other crimes have been repatriated to their respective countries through the Myanmar–Thailand Friendship Bridge II, while four Chinese nationals are being processed for prosecution, according to official reports.
The 10 deported individuals included nine Ethiopian nationals and one Kenyan national. They were found to have illegally entered Myanmar via border routes through neighbouring countries and engaged in online gambling, telecom fraud, and other criminal activities in the Shwe Kokko area of Myawady Township, Kayin State.
Authorities said the deportation was carried out in accordance with legal procedures, humanitarian considerations, and bilateral cooperation. Relevant officials, including representatives from immigration authorities, embassy officials from Ethiopia and Kenya, and Thai immigration officers, attended the handover ceremony.
In a separate case, four Chinese nationals were detained for violating visa regulations, and legal action has been initiated under the 1947 Immigration Emergency Provisions Act. They are prosecuted accordingly.
Officials stated that from 30 January 2025 to 16 June 2026, a total of 14,707 foreign nationals entering Myawady illegally have been detained, of whom 13,550 have already been deported. The remaining 1,157 individuals are either under legal proceedings or awaiting repatriation.
Authorities also said Myanmar continues to cooperate with neighbouring countries and international organizations to combat online scam operations and ensure the repatriation of foreign nationals involved or trafficked.
