THE Myanmar Durian Festival 2026 ceremony was held at Myaypadethakyun in Yangon Region’s Bahan Township on 19 May.
The event was jointly organized by the Agriculture Department under the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation, and the Myanmar Fruit, Flower and Vegetable Producer and Exporter Association (MFVP), aiming to promote the durian market internationally and exchange modern farming techniques and post-harvesting technologies.
“The main objective of today’s event is that we want to penetrate the international market. Durain production is adequate for domestic consumption, so this is our initiation for export,” said MFVP secretary U Pe Tike Aung. Myanmar has tried to expand the durian production and explore potential export markets. Myanmar’s durian market mainly relies on domestic consumption; however, it is expected to start exporting to overseas markets on a large scale in 2026- 2027 and introduce local durian varieties to international markets under the label of Myanmar products, said the Agriculture Department’s director-general.
He added that the department has also worked on manufacturing value-added durian products by inviting internal and external investors and experts.
Durian is produced abundantly in May, June and July in Myanmar, and its prices ranged from K20,000 per one depending on quality in 2025, and it has still been high this year too, he said. — MT/ZS
