A Myanmar delegation led by Deputy Minister for Education Dr Zaw Myint attended the Plenary Session of the 53rd Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO) Council Conference, held on 2 July in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam.
The conference commenced with an opening address by the current SEAMEO Council President, the Minister of Education of the Republic of the Philippines, followed by the presentation of the SEAMEO Council’s official report. The Director of the SEAMEO Secretariat then presided over the election of the new SEAMEO Council President and Chair of the 53rd Council Conference. The Minister of Education of Brunei Darussalam was unanimously elected to the role.
Subsequently, ministers and delegates from SEAMEO member countries delivered their country statements. Speaking on behalf of Myanmar, Deputy Minister Dr Zaw Myint emphasized the ongoing implementation and aspirations of the SEAMEO Strategic Plan 2021–2030, highlighting efforts to bring the Plan’s objectives into universities and schools, ultimately aiming to uplift the lives of millions of students through inclusive and quality education.
The conference continued with discussions on 39 working papers submitted by SEAMEO committees and institutions. It was also decided that the 54th SEAMEO Council Conference will be hosted by the Socialist Republic of Vietnam in 2027.
On 3 July, the Myanmar delegation visited the University of Brunei Darussalam to explore opportunities for academic and research collaboration. They also visited Masna Secondary School to observe the learning processes and classroom practices, particularly focusing on the activities of female students.
