Myanmar authorities detained 172 foreign nationals who illegally entered the country through border routes, including those crossing through Thailand. These individuals are involved in online gambling and fraud activities in Myawady, Maethawtalay area in Kayin State. The detained foreigners include 50 from China, 100 from Ethiopia and 22 from Kenya.

The Kayin State government, headed by Colonel Min Thu Kyaw and officials, coordinated the investigation and detention of these individuals. They also ensured the safe custody of the detained foreigners, with details about their personal information and records being thoroughly examined. The authorities are preparing to transfer these individuals back to their respective countries without delay.

From 30 January to 22 March 2025, a total of 8,042 foreign nationals were detained for illegal entry into Myanmar. Of these, 5,147 were transferred to their respective countries through Thailand, following legal procedures. The remaining 2,895 are ready to be transferred soon.

The detained individuals came from various countries including China, Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Pakistan, India, Uganda, Ethiopia, Nepal, Thailand, Rwanda, Kenya, Kazakhstan, Cambodia, Ghana, Bangladesh, Japan, Sri Lanka, Africa, Tunisia, Algeria, Congo, Cameroon and Chinese Taipei. The majority of the detainees are from China.
