Pyithu Hluttaw Speaker U Khin Yi met advocates, higher-grade pleaders and apprentice lawyers who visited the 18th day of the Third Regular Session of the Third Pyithu Hluttaw at the meeting hall in Nay Pyi Taw yesterday afternoon.

The Speaker welcomed their interest in observing parliamentary proceedings and explained that the legislature, one of the three Pillars of the State, consists of elected people’s representatives under Myanmar’s bicameral parliamentary system. He highlighted the Hluttaw’s responsibilities for amending, supplementing or repealing outdated laws and enacting new laws when necessary, representing public concerns through questions and motions, and coordinating with other branches of government. He also stressed the important role of parliamentary committees in reviewing existing laws concerning women, children, older persons, persons with disabilities and narcotic drugs, and reaffirmed his commitment to building a modern, capable and people-centred legislature.

The attendees expressed satisfaction at seeing how the Hluttaw addressed public concerns and aspirations through questions and discussions. They also noted the progress in transparent and democratic parliamentary proceedings and described the Hluttaw as an important institution that the public should visit and learn about.
