MYANMAR’S esports athletes who won the gold medal in Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) at the XX Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, returned to Yangon yesterday morning and received a warm welcome at Yangon International Airport.

Yangon Region Social Affairs Minister U Bo Htay, Director-General of the Department of Sports and Physical Education U Nyan Zaw Oo, officials, students and members of the public welcomed the gold medallists.

National Team Zanaka, which represented Myanmar in the MLBB event, comprised Myanmar Electronic Sports Federation President Dr Kaung Myat San, coach Ko Min Tun Aung and players Ko Shine Lin, Ko Hein Htet Oo, Ko Kyaw Thura, Ko Han Htoo Swe and Ko Myo Myint Maung. The team remained unbeaten throughout the competition and defeated Indonesia 4-0 in the final to win the gold medal.

Dr Kaung Myat San said the victory marked a new milestone for Myanmar sports and demonstrated that Myanmar athletes could compete successfully at the Asian level. He expressed gratitude to the President, relevant ministries and officials, the Yangon Region Government, the federation’s patrons and honorary patrons, and partner organizations for their support. He added that the achievement had strengthened the team’s determination to pursue a world championship title.

At the XX Asian Games, Myanmar competed in Teqball, esports, women’s football, gymnastics and Sepak Takraw, winning two gold, one silver and one bronze medal. The esports gold was Myanmar’s first Asian-level gold medal in esports history.

The XX Asian Games also marked the first time that MLBB was included as an official medal event. Myanmar made history by becoming the inaugural Asian Games gold medallists in MLBB. — Thitsa (MNA)/KZL
