Jointly organized by the Department of Basic Education and the Department of Information and Public Relations, a storytelling and poetry recitation competition aimed at developing school libraries and promoting reading habits was held yesterday at the Shalwe Hall of the No 1 Basic Education High School in Falam.
A total of 59 student contestants from high, middle and primary school levels at schools in Falam participated in the competition. Deputy Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Dr Thant Zaw Lwin, accompanied by the Chin State Minister for Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation and members of the Chin State Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Committee, visited the venue to observe and encourage the students during the competition.
Following the event, he inspected the ongoing renovation of two-storey, four-unit housing blocks belonging to the Department of Urban and Housing Development, as well as the renovation of the meeting hall of the District General Administration Department.
Additionally, the deputy minister and his entourage welcomed residents returning to Falam yesterday at Independence Pagoda in Chinmwal Ward.
They subsequently observed the data collection process being carried out by relevant departments for 111 returning local communities and provided relief supplies to them.
Since the Tatmadaw assumed control of Falam, local people and departmental personnel have been returning to the township to resume residence since 6 May. Government offices are operating normally, and 21.64 per cent of Falam’s urban population has already returned to the city.
In pursuit of the guidance of the Head of State, priority is being given to infrastructure repairs and assistance programmes for returning residents in Falam.
