A section of the Nyaungdonkyun embankment (Ayeyawady tributary) between mileposts 11/6 and 11/7, near Ganchaung Village in Nyaungdon Township, Ayeyawady Region, eroded and collapsed along a stretch measuring roughly 300 feet long and 45 feet wide due to river currents on the morning of 25 August.
To provide immediate, temporary protection against further bank erosion, emergency reinforcement operations are being aggressively executed using heavy machinery. Remedial measures include constructing a temporary setback embankment between mileposts 11/5 and 11/6, shoring up the base of the original irrigation embankment with sandbags over an estimated 700-foot stretch, and building an inner setback embankment between mileposts 11/6 + 300 feet and 11/7 + 600 feet. The riverbank stabilization work is also proceeding with the deployment of porcupines, the laying of geotextile sheets, the installation of two steel cable groynes, and mid-river sandbar dredging.
The operations are being carried out through the concerted efforts of local Tatmadaw personnel, Myanmar Police Force members, civil society organizations, and local residents. Officials from the Yangon Command inspected the site and coordinated necessary logistics.
