Authorities are continuing investigations into online scam activities, with a further two foreign nationals identified and detained and preparations made for their deportation.
The government has been investigating and identifying foreign nationals who illegally entered and stayed in border areas and became involved in criminal activities, including online gambling and online scams, and has been systematically deporting and transferring them to their respective countries in accordance with laws and procedures.
In the latest operation, one Chinese national and one Nigerian national, who had illegally entered sites around Myawady in Kayin State through unauthorized routes after passing through Thailand and some other neighbouring countries were detained. Authorities are conducting the necessary checks for their deportation.
Officials led by U Ye Lin Maung, Chairman of the Myawady District Administration and Administrative Committee and District Administrator, inspected the ongoing collection of personal information and records by interdepartmental teams to facilitate the swift transfer of the foreign nationals to their respective countries, and coordinated necessary measures.
From 30 January 2025 to 6 September 2026, a total of 14,769 foreign nationals who had illegally entered Myawady Township were detained. Investigations into all of them have been completed, and 13,888 were systematically transferred to their respective countries via Thailand in accordance with laws and procedures.
Of the remaining 881 foreign nationals, 661 have been prosecuted under Section 3(1)/13(1) of the Myanmar Immigration (Emergency Provisions) Act and the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law. The remaining 220 foreign nationals are ready to be transferred to their respective countries.
The government is also actively cooperating with neighbouring and regional countries and international organizations to identify, arrest and take strong action against foreign nationals involved in Online Scam Centres, including those operating behind the scenes.
At the same time, efforts are made to coordinate the speedy repatriation of foreign nationals who have fallen into difficult circumstances for various reasons, as well as foreign nationals who have been victims of human trafficking, to their respective countries.
