According to the Yangon City Development Committee (YCDC), geophysical surveys have been underway since 16 July to ensure the safety, structural integrity, and sustainability of Inya Lake, one of Yangon’s iconic natural environments and water conservation zones.
These exploratory operations are being conducted in detail by officials from the YCDC Engineering Department (Water and Sanitation), in collaboration with experts from the Irrigation and Water Utilization Management Department. They are utilizing theoretical and field-based technical methods to assess the lake’s subsurface formation, the stability of its dams, and groundwater seepage conditions.
Following this, necessary maintenance works will be continuously implemented based on the results obtained from these geophysical surveys.
Inya Lake was initially constructed as a reservoir during the British colonial era (1882-1883) to supply drinking water to Yangon. Originally, it was called Kokkine Lake, named after a nearby village, and later named Lake Victoria after the British Queen. It was officially renamed Inya Lake after Myanmar regained independence. Records show that water from this lake was once piped to Kandawgyi Lake in the city centre to distribute water across the entire city of Yangon.
