The Bagan Branch of the Department of Archaeology and National Museum has announced the discovery of bricks from an enclosure wall and the remains of a western gateway at the Thatbyinnyu Temple in the Bagan Ancient Cultural Heritage Area.
The discoveries were made during the Myanmar-China joint excavation and research project around the temple. Since July 2026, archaeologists have excavated the south-west corner of the enclosure wall and the western gateway using trenches measuring up to six metres wide, uncovering sections of the gateway and brick wall. Excavation continues to identify the temple’s south-west corner and the remains of its southern enclosure wall.
Earlier trial excavations in 2017 and further excavations in 2023 uncovered the north-west corner of the enclosure wall, brick structures and walls, sandstone blocks, brick floors and roof tiles.
