During the rainy season each year, people should take preventive measures and adopt healthy living practices to protect themselves from seasonal diseases. The diseases most commonly occurring during the rainy season include dengue fever, malaria, seasonal influenza, acute diarrhoea, dysentery, and respiratory tract infections.
The humid rainy season is a period when influenza viruses that affect the respiratory system thrive and spread. It is also the time when seasonal influenza and other respiratory tract infections become more prevalent. Therefore, local authorities and health staff have to raise public awareness about how to maintain good health and take appropriate precautions to prevent infection from these diseases.

Among the diseases that occur during the rainy season, health staff members need to brief the people on the outbreak of dengue fever transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes. If so, people will have the health knowledge about how to take care to avoid being bitten by Aedes mosquitoes. They will understand that Aedes mosquitoes typically bite during the daytime and tend to rest in dark, shaded areas inside homes.
To prevent dengue fever, it is important to eliminate mosquito breeding sites and places where mosquitoes can rest. That is why people and health staff have to conduct regular inspections to identify and eliminate potential breeding sites. The most effective way to prevent diseases that commonly occur during the rainy season is to protect people from mosquito bites.
In addition, health staff have to share ways and means with the people in relevant communities to prevent diseases such as acute diarrhoea, dysentery, and typhoid fever by paying close attention to food hygiene and drinking safe water. The means must include that food should be kept clean, fresh vegetables, fruits, meat, and fish should be thoroughly cooked before consumption, and only clean or boiled drinking water should be used. To prevent diseases, the best approach is to maintain good health and a strong immune system by choosing clean and nutritious food and practising good personal hygiene and healthy living habits.
Prevention is better than cure. Therefore, to protect against diseases that commonly occur during the rainy season, people are advised to eliminate mosquito breeding sites and places where mosquitoes can rest, avoid eating overripe fruit, keep their homes and surroundings clean, ensure proper drainage in ditches and drains, maintain good personal hygiene, and wash their hands frequently. By consistently practising these health awareness and preventive measures, everyone can help protect themselves from seasonal diseases during the rainy season.
