Vice-President Nan Ni Ni Aye, in the capacity of Chair of the National Committee on Social Protection, addressed the committee meeting yesterday.
At the meeting, she said that the social protection system is one of the fundamental pillars of State development, playing a vital role in ensuring social security for all citizens, reducing poverty, promoting human resource development, and supporting the country’s economic and social progress.
The Vice-President said social protection refers to the systematic implementation of government policies, procedures and programmes designed to protect individuals and households from economic and social risks, expand access to basic services and infrastructure as well as economic opportunities, and address humanitarian hardships arising from sudden income loss and emergencies.
She mentioned the eight major points of the Myanmar National Social Protection Strategic Plan and four core sectors being implemented for that strategic plan.
She stressed that effective implementation of social protection programmes being carried out by various ministries requires the cooperation of the government, the private sector, domestic and international charitable organizations, and the public. She urged the relevant ministries to formulate short-, medium- and long-term plans to implement programmes that have yet to be fully realized. She also pointed out that more than 10 years have passed since the National Social Protection Strategic Plan was issued and emphasized the need to review and update it in line with current developments to establish a stronger and more effective social protection system.
Vice-President Nan Ni Ni Aye noted social protection is a fundamental responsibility of the government that directly benefits the public and supports sustainable national development. She urged participants to strengthen the social protection system by discussing practical and effective measures in line with the goal of “leaving no one behind”.
Committee Vice- Chairman Union Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Dr Soe Win and Committee Secretary Deputy Minister Dr Thant Zaw Lwin reported on the social protection management, measures and completed work plans.
