BOTH domestic and foreign demand for the Indian chilli variety is rising, according to the Department of Consumer Affairs.

Dried Indian chilli is mostly used as a spice. It is also utilized in food and pharmaceutical industries. The demand for chilli is increasing year over year.

Dried chilli fetches a good price of K35,000-38,000 per viss. Myanmar exports chilli to Thailand, China and India.

Chilli from the Aungban area in southern Shan State is a valuable spice and an economically important crop. Indian chilli variety is primarily grown in Aungban, Heho, Pindaya, Ywangan and Taunggyi areas. Chilli plants thrive under shady trees. — NN/KK
