The Myanmar delegation led by Union Minister for Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation U Khin Maung Yi attended the launch ceremony of the Joint Plan of Action-CLEAR Sky Strategy in Bangkok, Thailand, on Tuesday.
Speaking at the event, the Union minister said the Joint CLEAR Sky Strategy (2024-2030) was initiated to carry out the aims and objectives of Laos, Myanmar and Thai leaders at the transboundary haze prevention meeting held on 7 April 2023. Myanmar is actively working with the departments concerned to conduct effective fire prevention strategies to control transboundary haze, especially in Shan State, which shares a border with Thailand.
He continued that the country also plants millions of trees every year, while 21 million trees were planted across the nation in the rainy season of 2024. It is also estimated that deforestation can be reduced to 20,000 acres in 2025 from 240,000 acres in 2020 through forest plantation. In eastern Shan State, which shares borders with Laos and Thailand, the forest coverage was 56.73 per cent in 2010, 60.17 per cent in 2015 and 82.03 per cent in 2020. Regional cooperation should also be promoted via this joint plan for the emergence of a haze-free zone.
Then, the attendees discussed the topic of “CLEAR Sky Strategy – Tackling Transboundary Haze in ASEAN”.
Natural Resources and Environmental Ministers, high-ranking officers and experts of Myanmar, Thailand and Laos attended the meeting, and the Myanmar delegation arrived back in Yangon yesterday evening.
