A total of 19 foreign nationals linked to online scams, illegal online gambling and other criminal activities in the Myawady– Shwe Kokko area of Kayin State were transferred to their respective countries via the Myanmar-Thailand Friendship Bridge II.
The group comprised 12 citizens from Taiwan Province of China, five Indonesians and two Pakistanis. Authorities said the individuals had entered Myanmar illegally through border routes after transiting through Thailand and other neighbouring countries, before becoming involved in unlawful activities.
Officials from the Myawady District Administration and Management Committee coordinated the transfer process, ensuring the accuracy of records and compliance with legal procedures.
Representatives from the immigration authorities of Myanmar and Thailand, officials from the Indonesian and Pakistani embassies to Thailand, and representatives of the Economic and Cultural Office of Taiwan Province of China in Myanmar attended the handover ceremony. Relevant documents were formally handed over to officials from the respective countries.
Authorities stated that from 30 January 2025 to 9 June 2026, a total of 14,703 foreign nationals who had entered Myawady Township illegally were detained and investigated. Of these, 13,540 have already been repatriated to their home countries via Thailand in accordance with legal procedures.
Of the remaining 1,163 foreign nationals, 662 have been prosecuted under immigration and narcotics-related laws. The other 501 individuals are ready for repatriation and are being properly accommodated pending transfer to their respective countries.
Authorities said they will continue cooperating with neighbouring countries, regional partners and international organizations to combat online scam networks, identify those involved in such activities and facilitate the repatriation of trafficking victims and other foreign nationals in distress.
