KNU, KNLA, and PDF terrorists launched a surprise attack on the security forces stationed in Mawtaung using overwhelming force. Mawtaung was temporarily occupied by the combined terrorist groups on 14 November 2025.
Tatmadaw columns carried out necessary preparations and force restructuring to retake and regain control of Mawtaung, which had been temporarily occupied by KNU, KNLA, and PDF terrorists, and to reopen the Taninthayi-Yephyu-Theinkhun-Thaephyu-Mawtaung route. The units were deployed in separate columns, established successive footholds step by step, and launched a counteroffensive from 5 May 2026. As a result, the Tatmadaw columns successfully regained full control in stages: Point 271 hill on 9 May, two temporary defensive positions near Phaungseik Village on 12 May, Phaungseik Village on 13 May, Hnonpwa Village on 15 May, No 5 Village on 16 May, No 3 Village on 17 May, No 1 Village on 18 May, and finally, Mawtaung town at 4 pm on 19 May. During their retreat, KNU, KNLA, and PDF terrorists allegedly disregarded the interests of local civilians and carried out malicious acts, including the planting and detonation of mines that destroyed the bridges at No 9 Village and No 8 Village.
Tatmadaw columns, prioritizing mission completion over their own lives, bravely carried out successive counteroffensives to retake Mawtaung town and the surrounding area. In the course of operations, a total of 207 engagements both major and minor clashes took place with the terrorist groups. From the enemy, 24 bodies, 25 assorted weapons, as well as ammunition and related equipment, were seized. Some Tatmadaw members also heroically sacrificed their lives for the State and Tatmadaw.
As Tatmadaw has regained control of Mawtaung town, residents are now able to return and resettle in their homes. Stability and peace are expected to return to the area, and cross-border trade flows and transport activities between the two countries via the Taninthayi-Mawtaung route will be able to resume.
