AUTHORITIES investigating online scam and telecom fraud operations have detained three more Ethiopian nationals who allegedly entered scam compounds near Myawady via illegal routes through neighbouring countries, including Thailand.

Officials are continuing to collect personal data and records through interdepartmental joint teams to facilitate the repatriation of the foreign nationals to their respective countries.

From 30 January 2025 to 16 May 2026, a total of 14,657 foreign nationals who illegally entered Myawady Township were detained. Following screening procedures, 13,422 individuals were deported to their home countries via Thailand in accordance with legal processes.

Of the remaining 1,235 detainees, 766 have been prosecuted under Myanmar’s immigration and narcotics laws, while 469 are being accommodated and prepared for repatriation.

Authorities said the government is cooperating with neighbouring countries, regional partners, and international organizations to identify and arrest those involved in online scam operations and their foreign masterminds, while also assisting trafficked and distressed foreign nationals to ensure prompt repatriation.
