The opening ceremony of the 20th South-East Asian Bodybuilding and Physique Sports Championship, hosted by Myanmar, was held at the Myanmar Convention Centre in Yangon on 16 May.

Yangon Region Chief Minister U Aung Naing Thu, Deputy Minister for Sports and ViceChair of Myanmar Olympic Committee U Nyi Nyi, regional ministers, the Yangon mayor, World Bodybuilding and Physique Sports Federation President Datuk Paul Chua and SouthEast Asian Bodybuilding and Physique Federation President Phumvarin Chunhawongvarit attended the ceremony together with athletes from seven countries.

In the Men’s Juniors Bodybuilding Under-21 event, Malaysia won gold, while Myanmar claimed silver and Vietnam took bronze. In the Men’s Senior Bodybuilding 55-kilogramme category, Vietnam secured gold, with Myanmar winning both silver and bronze medals.

In the Men’s Senior Bodybuilding 60-kilogramme event, Myanmar captured both gold and silver medals, while Vietnam earned bronze. In the 65-kilogramme category, Myanmar won gold, Thailand silver and Vietnam bronze. In the 70-kilogramme division, Vietnam claimed gold, Malaysia silver and Myanmar bronze.

In the Men’s Master Bodybuilding Over-45 event, Myanmar won gold and bronze, while the Philippines took silver. In the Men’s Sports Physique Up to 170-centimetre category, Myanmar secured gold, Thailand silver and Malaysia bronze. In the Over-170-centimetre category, Thailand won gold, Myanmar silver and Laos bronze.

Myanmar won gold in the Men’s Fitness Physique Open category, while Vietnam claimed silver and bronze. In the Women’s Fitness Physique Open category, Vietnam won gold and bronze, while Myanmar took silver.

After the latest events, Myanmar leads the medal table with five gold, five silver and three bronze medals. Competitions in 12 more event categories will continue on 17 May.

The championship features athletes from Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Vietnam and Laos, with competitions taking place on 16 and 17 May.

A total of 100 athletes are competing, including 39 from Myanmar and 28 from Vietnam. Ten categories were contested on 16 May, while 12 categories will be held on 17 May.
