An inspection team led by U Kyaw Soe and Dr Than Myint, members of the Myanmar National Human Rights Commission, conducted an inspection visit to the Metta Aye Yeik Myon Youth Development Charity Home, Hlegu Township, Yangon Region, on 19 March 2026, under Sections 43 and 44 of the Commission Law. During the inspection, the team inspected the conditions of the children being cared for and educated at the Charity Home, the acceptance of children in line with the home’s rules and regulations, provision of healthcare services, food and nutrition supplement, clean drinking water and water for domestic use, accommodation arrangements in dormitories, provision of academic education, vocational training, the accessibility of Citizenship Scrutiny Card, the arrangements for doing physical exercises and sport activities, the right to contact with their families, the right to family reintegration, and the right to practice religion in accordance with their faith.
Subsequently, the team visited the Hlegu District Court Lock-up, the Hlegu Township Court Lock-up, and the Hlegu Myoma Police Station Lock-up, and inspected the conditions of detainees during the remand period, whether any torture occurred while in custody, and whether there were opportunities to meet their family members, as well as the arrangement for food, provision during the court appearance period, the disposal of sewage and overall cleanliness of the facilities, and access to legal assistance. The team conducted interviews with detainees and recorded their statements.
The findings and recommendations from the inspection team’s visits will be sent to the relevant department for necessary action under the Commission law. — MNHRC
