THE Myanmar Embassy in Vientiane announced on 20 October that Myanmar workers in Laos no longer need to apply for a leave endorsement letter at the embassy when returning to Myanmar temporarily on leave.

Previously, an announcement issued on 1 May 2026 required Myanmar workers in Laos to apply for a leave endorsement letter when returning to Myanmar on temporary leave.

However, this has been relaxed because most workers faced difficulties due to short leave allowances and insufficient time to obtain all required documents. The embassy said the change helps workers return on time, protect their jobs, and speed up the process.

Furthermore, under the Agreement for the Avoidance of Double Taxation and the Prevention of Fiscal Evasion with Respect to Taxes on Income signed between Myanmar and Laos in 2009, the embassy informed that it currently does not collect income tax from Myanmar citizens in Laos. According to the statement, PJ (Passport for Job) holders who are returning to Myanmar on leave or upon completing their employment can present their tax receipts with documents showing income tax paid to the Lao government to obtain a tax clearance certificate. — TWA/ZN
