A delegation from the Myanmar Iron and Steel Association attended the Second ASEAN Policymakers Conference on Steel and the 2026 ASEAN Iron & Steel Forum: Sustainability & Construction, held in Manila, the Philippines, from 21 to 24 September, according to reports. The ASEAN Steel Forum 2026 was organized to discuss regional policies for the sustainable development of the steel industry, reducing carbon emissions and upgrading the construction sector.
During the forum, the Myanmar delegates presented and discussed Myanmar’s steel consumption in comparison with global steel consumption trends and exchanged experiences with policymakers and industry leaders from the regional steel sector.
Through the forum, Myanmar gained insights and experiences related to steel sector policy formulation, industrial development and environmental conservation. Furthermore, opportunities to engage with and exchange views with policymakers and industrialists from ASEAN countries provided the Myanmar steel sector with valuable knowledge and experience, while creating opportunities to enhance cooperation within the ASEAN region.
In addition to representatives from the host country, the Philippines, representatives from Myanmar, Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia attended the forum. The Myanmar delegation included Dr Kathi Lwin, President of the Myanmar Iron and Steel Association, and association members, along with U Kyaw Soe Wai, General Manager of No 1 Heavy Industry Enterprise under the Ministry of Industry and MSME Development. — ASH/TH
