Security forces arrested 20 people allegedly involved in online scams and illegal gambling activities at a house in Kaunghmuton Ward, Kaungmulwe area, Muse, Shan State (North), yesterday.
The group comprised one Chinese national and 19 Myanmar nationals—17 men and two women. Authorities also seized 77 mobile phones, three all-in-one computers, one laptop and other equipment believed to be related to the online operations.
The arrests followed investigations aimed at preventing online scam and illegal gambling groups from establishing operations in the area. Authorities said the suspects would face legal action under existing laws after the investigations were completed, while the seized equipment would be dealt with in accordance with established procedures.
The government is continuing its efforts, in cooperation with neighbouring and regional countries, to prevent online scams and illegal online gambling operations from being established in Myanmar.
