THE Department of Water Resources and Improvement of River Systems is planning riverbank protection, silt dredging and channel excavation work along the Ngawun River, with embankment construction or diversion channels to be implemented where necessary.
Deputy Minister for Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation U Bo Bo Kyaw inspected the planned and ongoing works along the river on 10 August, including sections of the Ngawun embankment in Hinthada and Laymyethna townships affected by erosion and sandbank formation.
At milepost 25/3 in Laymyethna Township, where subsidence had occurred, geotextile bags (geobags) are being used to protect the embankment from erosion. Steel sheet piles are also being driven to block deep-water channels, while large geobags are being placed using dredging vessels and boats.
Officials also discussed measures to strengthen the embankment and accelerate riverbank protection works along the Ngawun River. — MNA/KZL
