MYANMA Railways (MR) has issued nine rules that passengers must follow to ensure safe and smooth train travel. It warned that anyone who breaches the regulations may face up to three months’ imprisonment, a fine of between K10,000 and K100,000, or both.
The rules prohibit the misuse of emergency equipment on trains, damage to or interference with communication systems and equipment, boarding or alighting from trains while they are departing or before they have come to a complete stop, and travelling on train roofs, footboards, between carriages or in unauthorized areas. Passengers are also prohibited from engaging in behaviour or speech that disturbs other passengers, obstructing railway staff in the performance of their duties, and smoking in non-smoking station areas or train carriages.
Myanma Railways had previously issued guidelines urging passengers to observe cleanliness on trains, refrain from spitting betel quid, avoid placing their feet on seats, use seats properly so that other passengers can also use them hygienically, avoid making loud phone calls, playing music or speaking loudly in ways that may disturb others, and dispose of rubbish properly.
Myanma Railways has been operating services with new, upgraded train carriages to provide passengers with comfortable, safe and affordable travel. However, some passengers have noted that the failure of a minority of travellers to follow the rules has caused inconvenience and disturbance to others.
