The modernization of Myanmar’s export sector represents an important pillar of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar’s broader economic development strategy, aimed at gradually transforming the country from reliance on primary commodity exports towards a more diversified, value-added production base. In line with national economic planning priorities, the Ministry of Commerce, in coordination with relevant private sector stakeholders, is implementing measures under the National Export Strategy (2026-2030) Action Plans to strengthen trade performance and improve export competitiveness.
Under this framework, Myanmar is working toward improving the overall trade balance and expanding export capacity across priority sectors. The Myanmar Trade Promotion Organization (MyanTrade) continues to support efforts to promote exports while ensuring balanced import management, with a focus on strengthening productive sectors and enhancing trade efficiency. Key export-oriented industries include agro-based products, garments and textiles, rubber, and selected light manufacturing goods, which remain central to Myanmar’s participation in regional and global value chains.
To support export growth, the Ministry of Commerce has been implementing trade facilitation measures aimed at improving logistics efficiency and strengthening institutional support for exporters. A key priority is the continued development of the Cut-Make-Pack (CMP) garment and textile industry, which plays a significant role in industrial employment and foreign exchange earnings. Efforts are being made to streamline export procedures, reduce administrative costs, and improve the efficiency of customs and trade-related services.
In addition, digitalization of trade processes is being expanded through online licensing systems and electronic trade documentation platforms. These initiatives are designed to improve transparency, reduce processing time, and support micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in accessing international markets. The government is also encouraging exporters to comply with international quality standards and strengthen value chain integration to enhance competitiveness in global markets.
Agricultural diversification and food safety compliance remain another important focus area of Myanmar’s export development agenda. As agriculture continues to play a central role in the national economy, key export commodities such as pulses, beans, oilseeds, and fishery products are being prioritized for quality improvement and value addition. Relevant ministries, in cooperation with international partners and private sector organizations, are working to strengthen Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) measures and improve pest and disease management practices in major agricultural regions, including Sagaing and Magway.
These efforts aim to enhance product quality and ensure compliance with international market requirements, particularly in major export destinations such as India and other regional markets. Myanmar’s agricultural exports continue to contribute significantly to regional food supply chains and rural livelihoods.
At the regional level, Myanmar continues to expand its trade engagement under frameworks such as the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) and other multilateral economic cooperation mechanisms. These agreements provide opportunities for improved market access and deeper integration into regional supply chains.
Efforts are also being explored to enhance trade facilitation through improved financial cooperation and settlement mechanisms between trading partners, where mutually agreed. Such measures may contribute to reducing transaction costs and supporting smoother cross-border trade flows. In parallel, discussions continue strengthening institutional support mechanisms to facilitate trade promotion and private sector participation in external markets.
Overall, Myanmar’s export modernization agenda reflects a gradual but steady transition towards a more diversified and competitive export structure. Through continued reforms in trade policy, logistics, digital systems, and agricultural standards, the country aims to strengthen its position within regional and global trade networks and support long-term sustainable economic growth.
