YANGON is drafting a major urban development expansion that will allocate land plots to civil servants and retired staff as soon as Union-level authorities clear the project for execution, according to Regional Development Affairs Minister U Myo Myint Aung.

The minister provided this response on 29 June during the ninth day of the second regular session of the third Yangon Region Hluttaw, answering a question raised by U Thawda, Representative from the Dagon Myothit (East) Township Constituency 2.

The question was about plans to allocate land plots to civil servants, as some of them with over 30 years of service who endured the pressure of the social punishment during 2021 have never received a land plot or low-cost housing unit.

Yangon Region Minister for Development Affairs U Myo Myint Aung clarified that no active programme exists, noting that the government is instead drafting new urban development initiatives.

Furthermore, he explained that under the Constitution, urban land management must follow the directives of the Union level. Therefore, these plans must be submitted to the Union Government for guidance.
