Mandalay Region achieved the country’s highest pass rate in the 2026 matriculation examination, with 28,393 of 45,635 candidates passing, giving the region an overall success rate of 62.22 per cent.
Students gathered at examination centres across Mandalay from 6 am yesterday to check their results, while teachers assisted with the orderly release of the results.
Dr Than Htike Soe, headmaster of No 16 Basic Education High School, said the school’s pass rate had improved by about five percentage points compared with last year, while the number of students gaining five distinctions had risen from one to four.
“Both our pass rate and the number of distinction winners increased. It reflects the hard work of our teachers and students,” he said. The nation’s highest-scoring student, Ma Thiri Soe, who earned distinctions in all six subjects, said her success was built on consistent daily study and repeated practice using past examination papers.
“I worked hard but never expected to finish first. If you keep trying, you can achieve your goals,” she said.
National second-place student Maung Sithu Bo also credited his achievement to the support of his teachers and parents.
“Regular practice was the key. This success is not mine alone but the result of everyone who supported me,” he said.
Several other top performers echoed the importance of steady preparation rather than last-minute revision, encouraging future candidates to study consistently throughout the academic year. Meanwhile, all 10 candidates who sat the examination at Mandalay Central Prison passed, with four earning distinctions in three subjects, five gaining distinctions in two subjects and one receiving a distinction in one subject. — Myo Thant (Mandalay Daily)/ST
