CONTINUOUS rainfall in Hpakant Township, Kachin State, with recorded precipitation of 6.89 inches has caused the Uru Creek and local creeks to rise, leading to flooding in several low-lying wards on the morning of 21 June, according to reports.
Overflow triggered by torrential rains into Mawwun Creek inundated areas 4 and 5 of Mawwun Ward by about one foot and area 6 by about two and a half feet. Floodwaters also reached about three feet in Hngetpyawtaw Ward and Mashi Khtaung Ward and about two feet in Ayemya Thaya Ward.
At the Uru Creek water gauge near Kansee Village in Lonkhin Village-tract, water levels had risen to about three feet, exceeding the designated danger level of about two feet.
Members of the township management and administration committee inspected the situation and arranged small boats to ensure transport for residents living in flooded areas. Township departments, ward administrative bodies and social welfare organizations have also made preparations to issue early warnings and carry out evacuations and rescue work if water levels continue to rise.
No deaths or injuries to people or animals have been reported, according to locals.
