Abirdwatching programme ha sbeen launched in the Kyonkapyin-Tapseik Wildlife Conservation Area, located in Wakema Township, Ayeyawady Region. The initiative is being led by the Kyonkapyin-Tapseik Community Conservation Association (KTCCA), which aims to generate income for locals through tourism-linked biodiversity conservation efforts. “The primary goal is to provide income for locals when tourists visit. We have local guides available to explain bird species to visitors.
There are also set fees for those who choose to travel by boat,” said an official from the organization. While the sanctuary previously attracted interest from international tourists for its biodiversity, the post-COVID era has seen a rise in visits from domestic travellers. “We first started the birdwatching programme before COVID-19, and it was quite popular. We had to stop during the pandemic, but we could resume around 2023. Now, we see domestic visitors coming to watch the birds with great interest,” the official added.
Currently, the area is home to approximately 100 bird species, encompassing endangered and rare species, as well as native birds. The KTCCA is working in collaboration with local people to conserve the area and conduct educational outreach. Thanks to increased local participation in these conservation efforts, the biodiversity in the area reportedly continues to flourish.
