EMERGENCY measures are underway to prevent further collapse and erosion of the Nyaungdon Island Embankment along a branch of the Ayeyawady River in Chaunggyi Village-Tract, Chaungphya Village, Nyaungdon Township, Maubin District, Ayeyawady Region.

The section between mileposts 11/6 and 11/7 collapsed on 26 August morning due to river erosion. Tatmadaw personnel, Myanmar Police Force members, social organizations and residents are working with heavy machinery to reinforce the embankment with sandbags and construct a temporary protective spur.

Ayeyawady Region Chief Minister U Aye Kyaw, together with the deputy minister for Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation, inspected the damaged section and instructed officials to expedite emergency measures to prevent further erosion and protect residents and their property. Financial assistance was provided to households and betel plantations relocated in advance for construction of the protective spur.

The chief minister also inspected drainage and water-flow improvement works in Maubin Township and discussed plans to rebuild Danubyu Myoma Market as a modern market with officials.
