Taninthayi Region earned US$287.971 million in the 2025-2026 financial year.
Being Myanmar’s leading seafood-exporting region, Taninthayi generated $312.525 million from seafood exports in the 2020-2021 financial year, $272.026 million in 2021-2022, $232.189 million in 2022-2023, $253.355 million in 2023-2024, $303.628 million in 2024-2025, and $287.971 million in 2025-2026. The slight decline in export earnings during the 2025-2026 financial year was due to global economic conditions and difficulties related to fuel supplies in the transport sector.
“The shrimp produced in Taninthayi Region are exported from Myeik to Thailand and then shipped by air to China. In addition, shrimp are also exported by sea from Myeik to Japan. If fish and shrimp can be exported live instead of frozen, foreign earnings could more than double. Moreover, if direct air freight exports become possible instead of relying on sea transport, export revenues could increase three to four times. By shifting from raw material exports to value-added products and expanding direct air freight exports, Myanmar’s marine export sector will enter a new era and make a significant contribution to the country’s economic growth,” said U Thet Soe, secretary of the region fisheries federation.
Efforts are underway through cooperation between relevant ministries and the Myanmar Fisheries Federation to further develop fisheries and aquatic production in Taninthayi Region. These efforts aim to increase marine product production, create more employment opportunities within the region, and improve the livelihoods of fishery workers and their families.
During the 2025-2026 financial year, the aquaculture sector in Taninthayi Region earned $2.032 million from exports offish, shrimp farming generated $48.003 million, soft-shell crab farming earned $1.689 million, snail farming brought $0.424 million, and seaweed farming generated $0.045 million, totalling $52.193 million.
